Lourdes R. Guerrero - The Gigas Group

Lourdes R. Guerrero, EdD, MSW – Dr. Lourdes Guerrero is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research and Geriatrics. She is currently on the evaluation team for the NIH Diversity Program Consortium and UCLA Coordination and Evaluation Center. She is also the Associate Director for the Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) and TimeOut@UCLA (an innovative, intergenerational respite program for caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia). Dr. Guerrero has professional experience working in graduate medical education, higher education policy, community-based social services and community college teaching. Her research interests include Latino student success models, evaluation research, diversity in the biomedical workforce, and health disparities among caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Dr. Guerrero obtained her Doctor of Education degree from UCLA and Master of Social Work degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. She also has a Master of Pastoral Ministry degree from the Franciscan School of Theology and a BA in Chicano Studies from UC Berkeley. She has served on the board of directors of various non-profit organizations including Ready, Set, Read! and MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity). She has worked on independent consulting projects with the Monterey County Office of Education/Migrant Education Office, the Latina Researchers Network, and the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Los Angeles.

Carlos R. Guerrero, PhD – Dr. Carlos Reyes Guerrero is Professor of Chicana/o Studies at Los Angeles City College, an Adjunct Lecturer for Chicana and Chicano Studies and an Educational Opportunity Program Transitional Faculty at CSU, Northridge. He has worked with the Institute of Arts and Media at CSUN collecting oral histories and photo collections from local and international photographers and has served as the National Chair for the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies. Dr. Guerrero’s work focuses on community college and first-generation students. He is currently serving as the Interim Vice-Chair of the California Community College Ethnic Studies Faculty Council. Dr. Guerrero has worked within the Chicana/ Studies and Ethnic Studies discipline areas for 29 years. His work as a curriculum evaluator provides insights to academic departments, faculty, and professional organizations into developing curriculum for student success.

Carmen Diaz-French, MA – Carmen Diaz-French is currently the superintendent of Piner-Olivet Union School District. In her previous position as executive director and founder of Hawking Charter Schools, Inc., Carmen Diaz focused on project-based, experiential learning, integrating English Language Arts and Mathematics with the hands-on facets of the Sciences, the Arts, and Engineering.  Alongside her team she started the organization with 130 students in 2012 growing it to the current enrollment of over 900 students on two sites grades K-12 and a waiting list in all grade levels. Carmen established the charter school as a 501©3 non-profit and established the independent status and direct funding charter model to ensure the future fiscal sustainability and longevity of the organization.  These schools are outperforming all neighboring schools in science and mathematics.

Carmen has been an educator since she became a teacher in 1998, and she has participated in various roles in charter schools including engaging community grassroots support, charter development, renewals, board training, systems development, and curriculum and instruction since 2005.   

Carmen received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of California, San Diego, and her Masters in Leadership Studies and Preliminary Administrative Credential from the University of San Diego. She is also a certified STEAM administrator and received her Tier II Clear Administrative Credential.
